Moss animals taking over the world

Here’s another case of invertebrates in pop culture.

A Finnish indie band called Saaret has a song titled Moss Animals, which is the common name for bryozoans!

Fittingly, the song’s cover features an image of a bryozoan embryo:

Cover image of Moss Animals, a single by the band Saaret released in 2019. The round grey matter on the right is a snapshot of a bryozoan embryo from one of my timelapse movies.

How can I tell that’s a bryozoan embryo? I studied them for years during my PhD. The shape and arrangement of the inner blastomeres are typical. But, mainly because the image is from one of my time-lapse movies of bryozoan development:

Had they contacted me, I would have been more than happy to offer high-resolution images for the cover or video clip. But I’m flattered anyway.

So what’s the song about? Bryozoans taking over the world!

Listen to it on Spotify.
